Protect Your Solar Investment: How Solar Insure Provides Peace of Mind for Hawaii Homeowners

Installing a solar energy system represents a significant investment in your home’s future—one that promises decades of clean, renewable energy and substantial savings on electricity costs. Yet like any sophisticated technology, solar systems require proper protection to ensure they deliver their full potential over their lifespan. At Independent Energy Hawaii, we understand the importance of safeguarding your solar investment, which is why we partner with Solar Insure to provide comprehensive protection plans specifically designed for Hawaii homeowners.

What is Solar Insure?

Solar Insure stands apart in the renewable energy industry by offering the most comprehensive protection available for residential solar systems. Unlike standard manufacturer warranties that often cover limited components for shorter periods, Solar Insure provides 30 years of complete system coverage, backed by an A-rated insurance company, Zurich Insurance.

This premium protection plan addresses the full spectrum of your solar system needs, including:

  • Parts replacement for all major components
  • Labor coverage for repairs and replacements
  • Protection for roof penetrations
  • Comprehensive inverter coverage
  • Monitoring and proactive service alerts
  • Transferable protection for home sales

What makes Solar Insure particularly valuable is that it consolidates protection across various system components manufactured by different companies, providing a seamless solar warranty experience rather than requiring homeowners to navigate multiple coverage policies with varying terms and conditions.

The SI-30 Battery Warranty: Complete Protection for Your Energy Storage System

For homeowners who have invested in a battery storage system—an increasingly popular option in Hawaii—Solar Insure offers the specialized SI-30 Battery Warranty. This groundbreaking protection plan extends the same comprehensive coverage to your battery storage system that the standard Solar Insure warranty plan provides for your solar panels and components.

The SI-30 Battery Warranty includes:

  • 30 years of comprehensive coverage for battery storage systems
  • Protection for both parts and labor
  • Coverage for battery capacity degradation beyond manufacturer specifications
  • Warranty service from certified technicians
  • Transferability to new homeowners

This protection is particularly valuable considering that most battery manufacturers typically offer warranties of only 10 years—leaving a significant gap in protection for such a critical and substantial component of your renewable energy system. By extending coverage to a full 30 years, the SI-30 Battery Warranty ensures your entire solar-plus-storage system remains protected throughout its operational life.

Solar Insure Benefits: Complete Protection for Peace of Mind

Solar Insure’s protection plan offers several advantages that standard manufacturer warranties typically don’t provide:

Comprehensive Parts Coverage

All major system components are protected, including:

  • Solar panels
  • Solar Batteries (with SI-30 Battery Warranty)
  • Battery Replacement (See terms and conditions).
  • Inverters (string inverters, microinverters, and power optimizers)
  • Roof Penetrations
  • Mounting hardware and racking
  • Monitoring systems

Many manufacturer warranties cover only the panels themselves, leaving other critical components with shorter warranty periods or limited coverage. Solar Insure ensures every part of your system is protected for the full 30 years.

Labor Warranty

A frequently overlooked aspect of solar protection is labor coverage. When a standard manufacturer warranty covers a replacement part but not the labor to install it, homeowners can face significant out-of-pocket expenses. Solar Insure includes comprehensive labor coverage, ensuring that qualified technicians can service your system without additional cost to you.

Roof Penetration Warranty

One of the most valuable aspects of Solar Insure’s protection is coverage for roof penetrations—the points where mounting hardware attaches to your roof structure. These connection points are critical to both system stability and home protection, as improper installation or deterioration can lead to water intrusion and property damage. Many standard warranties specifically exclude roof penetrations, leaving homeowners vulnerable to potentially costly repairs.

Proactive Monitoring

Rather than waiting for a problem to become apparent through reduced energy production or system failure, Solar Insure works with monitoring systems to identify potential issues early. This proactive approach often allows for intervention before minor problems become major repairs, minimizing system downtime and maximizing your energy production.

Transferable Protection

If you sell your home during the 30-year coverage period, Solar Insure protection can transfer to the new homeowner—an attractive selling feature that can enhance your property’s value and marketability. This transferability provides continuity of protection and peace of mind for both sellers and buyers.

Real-World Protection: What’s Covered

Solar Insure’s protection plan is designed to be straightforward and comprehensive. Here’s how it addresses common solar system issues:

Inverter Failures: Often considered the most vulnerable component of solar systems, inverters typically carry manufacturer warranties of just 10-12 years. Solar Insure extends this protection to the full 30 years, covering replacement parts and installation labor.

Panel Degradation: While solar panels are durable, they can occasionally experience accelerated degradation or complete failure. Solar Insure covers the replacement of underperforming panels throughout the 30-year period.

Battery Replacement: If your battery falls below 50% capacity after year 11 of the 30-year term, SolarInsure will cover the full cost of the replacement.

Mounting Hardware Deterioration: Exposure to Hawaii’s climate can affect mounting systems over time. Solar Insure covers these structural components for the full 30-year term.

Roof Leaks: Are you scared of going solar because you have heard of people who had roof leaks after solar installation? SolarInsure warrants roof penetrations and the 3’ area around them for roof leaks for 30 years. Giving you peace of mind for the long term.

A key advantage of Solar Insure’s approach is its “no fine print” philosophy. Unlike some warranty programs that contain numerous exclusions and limitations, Solar Insure offers transparent coverage designed to genuinely protect your investment rather than minimizing the provider’s obligation.

Status: The program is capped at 50 megawatts (MW), as of right now we are at 6.2 MW.

  • Currently customers who are accepted into the program will receive $850 per kilowatt (kW).
  • After the first 15 MW is filled, the next 15 MW of committed capacity will receive $750 per kW.
  • After the next 15 MW is used the last 20 MW of committed capacity will receive $500 per kW.

Customers that are not currently enrolled in the company’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) Program will receive a fixed monthly bill credit for energy exported to the grid for three years. The credit is an amount equivalent to the respective retail rate for electricity exported during the two-hour period. After these three years are completed any underlying interconnection tariff export rates, if any, will apply.

Customers who wish to participate with an existing solar system and are presently enrolled in a customer energy program (such as Net Energy Metering, and Grid Supply or others) will continue to receive full benefits from these programs. Up to 5 kW of new panels may be added under existing programs. There is no limit on the size of an individual customer’s battery.

If you would like to add more than 5 kW of additional capacity of PV, it is possible as long as you still adhere to a 2:1 PV to battery output ratio. These apply to any interconnection tariff customers!

“Easily the most professional crew I ever had the pleasure of doing business with, and I never felt alone or in the dark thanks to Desta. He helped me with all my questions and I loved the fact that he was just a phone call away. Dedication to something like that is just hard to find nowadays. This company was a breath of fresh air for me and I wish I could do such an awesome crew justice with such a simple review. 10/10″

“Desta, Adam, Mike, Garrison and the rest of the Independent Energy Team are amazing. They were knowledgeable, responsive and helpful throughout our whole solar process. When issues came up (as they always do with projects), they went the extra mile to make sure everything worked properly.
Our panels and battery were installed on time as promised and are working great – just got our first ever $26 HECO bill!
This company cares about helping people and doing quality work, which is very rare these days. Hands down the best experience I’ve had with a company for home improvement/renovations. Highly recommend!”
