Solar energy for Hawaii homes

How Much Does Solar Cost in Hawaii?

On Oahu and Maui, a home solar system costs about $20,000 for 5 kW up to about $46,000 for 15 kW, or roughly $2.95-4.15 per watt. Bigger systems cost less per watt. Adding a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 battery adds about $13,000. For example, an 8 kW system with one Powerwall costs about $42,000-43,000.

Flat, published prices. No surprises. Every add-on priced upfront and confirmed upon site survey.

Adding a battery

We recommend every solar customer consider a battery to use more of their own energy and power selected circuits during outages. Savings and runtime depend on system design, usage, utility rules, weather and stored charge. Off-grid operation requires a separate assessment.

Why IEH is worth it: what you get for the price

We’re not the cheapest installer in Hawaii, and we don’t try to be. The cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest system. Here’s what comes with every IEH install:

  • 2,000+ installations and 300+ five-star Google reviews.

  • The first installer ever named Solar Insure Elite.

  • Tesla Premier Certified Installer, plus NABCEP-certified and a certified Enphase installer.

  • First year of SolarServe Standard included with every new install. Every IEH proposal includes the first year of SolarServe Standard (normally $499/year): an annual Solar Check-Up and panel washing, system monitoring and troubleshooting, and discounts on repairs. Most installers don’t include ongoing service. We do.

  • A track record of service after the install. Too many Hawaii homeowners are left with orphaned systems when their installer disappears. We provide an ongoing service option for our installations and systems left behind by other installers. We even take care of systems other companies left behind through SolarServe.

  • Up to 30 years of coverage through Solar Insure. SI-30 Solar covers panels, inverter, optimizers, racking and labor, plus eligible resealing and reflashing around roof penetrations, subject to policy terms. It’s transferable, with $0 deductible, $0 subscription and $0 onboarding fees. Optional SI-30 Total adds battery coverage.

The real cost of solar: upfront price vs. total cost

The sticker price is only part of the story. How you pay, and what you pay over time, matters more.

Option 1: Pay about 30% less upfront with a prepaid lease

Through our partner Participate Energy, a prepaid lease costs about 30% less upfront than paying cash. It also works for battery-only installs.

SystemIEH cash priceIEH with Participate Energy
8 kW + 1 Powerwall 3About $42,000-43,000About $29,500-30,000
10 kW + 2 Powerwall 3sAbout $56,500-57,500About $39,500-40,500
13 kW + 3 Powerwall 3sAbout $73,000-76,000About $51,000-53,000

Paying about 30% less upfront for the same bill savings means your system pays for itself about 30% faster.

Option 2: Finance smarter, because total cost beats monthly payment

A low monthly payment can hide a much higher total cost. Here’s an example on a similar system:

Illustrative HSFCU loanAssumption
Amount financed$57,000
Total term8 years, including 18 months with no payments
APR0% for 18 months, then 7.7%
Repayment78 monthly payments of about $931
Illustrative total paidAbout $72,600

A shorter repayment period can lower total interest costs. Compare actual lender disclosures before deciding.

Our loan partners:

  • HSFCU: APR as low as 7.7%, 8-year term, loans up to $75,000, with 0% APR and no payments for the first 18 months.

  • HOCU: APR as low as 6.99%, 10-year term, loans up to $100,000, with 0% APR and no payments for the first 24 months. Learn more at HOCU.

Examples only, based on typical system pricing. HSFCU example: $57,000 financed, 8-year term, 0% APR for 18 months, then 7.7% APR. All loans are subject to credit approval. Rates and terms may change. Lease figures are examples and subject to approval.

How to compare solar quotes fairly

  • Compare total cost, not just price or monthly payment. Add up what you’ll pay over the life of the loan or lease.

  • Compare the same equipment. Panel brand, battery brand and storage size all affect price. We install Tesla, Franklin, Enphase and Sigenergy batteries, so you can choose the one that fits you.

  • Check what’s included. Permits, roof-type adders, electrical upgrades, utility paperwork and monitoring.

  • Check the warranty. How long, what it covers and whether it costs extra.

  • Ask who services it later. Who will be there in year 10? With IEH, the first year of SolarServe Standard is included.

  • Watch for outdated tax credits. Homeowner purchases in 2026 no longer qualify for the federal residential credit. Do not confuse that expired credit with prepaid-lease pricing.

Hawaii solar incentives

Homeowners buying solar in 2026 no longer qualify for a federal tax credit. A prepaid lease through Participate Energy can still cut the cost by about 30%. For Hawaii’s state tax credit, see our Hawaii solar tax credit guide.

How long does solar take to pay for itself in Hawaii?

Most IEH customers see a payback of about 6-8 years when paying cash, and about 4-6 years with a Participate Energy prepaid lease. Your exact numbers depend on your bill, system size and location, and they’re in your proposal.

Why do bigger solar systems cost less per watt?

Many costs, like design, permits and labor setup, stay about the same no matter the system size. Spreading them over more panels lowers the price per watt.

Not for homeowners buying in 2026. A prepaid lease through Participate Energy can still cut the cost by about 30%. Quotes or articles showing a 30% federal credit are out of date.

Does Independent Energy Hawaii offer solar discounts?

Yes. Independent Energy Hawaii offers published discounts of $500 to $2,500 for military and first responders, Lahaina fire families, Maui Powerwall 3 customers and online-permit homes, plus per-watt savings on JA Solar and QCells panels. Discounts may change, and the team confirms which apply during the site survey.

Why choose IEH if another quote is cheaper?

The cheapest quote isn't always the cheapest system. With IEH you get the first year of SolarServe Standard monitoring and service included, up to 30 years of coverage through Solar Insure, and financing options that can lower your total cost. A prepaid lease cuts about 30% off the upfront price, and a shorter loan can reduce total interest costs, depending on APR, fees and repayment terms.
