Getting to Know Us: Independent Energy Hawaii
Independent Energy Hawaii was founded on a simple mission: make solar simple and accessible for everyone. Here is our history, our approach to customer service, and what sets us apart.
Independent Energy Hawaii is a locally owned solar energy company serving homeowners across Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Island. We design and install solar and battery systems with a focus on quality, transparency, and long-term reliability rather than volume sales.
Our history
Independent Energy Hawaii was founded by James Rudolph, a master electrician who began his solar career in 2008. With a vision of building a family-owned business, James partnered with his son, Desta Rudolph, combining decades of electrical trade experience with modern solar technology and installation methods. Desta, an accomplished solar professional and entrepreneur, established Independent Energy Systems, LLC at age 22 and has been central to the company’s growth since. Together, they built a company known for installation quality and straightforward customer service.
Our mission
Our mission is simple: to make solar simple and accessible for everyone. Every part of how we operate, from the first consultation through post-installation support, is built around that goal.
Our vision
We aim to lead in the Hawaii solar industry through innovative, sustainable energy solutions, and to contribute to the state’s goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2045. That means not just installing systems, but educating homeowners so they understand exactly what they are buying and how it performs over time.
What we build
We install custom solar energy systems and battery storage tailored to each home’s roof, shading, and energy usage rather than a one-size-fits-all package. On Maui, our Maui solar page covers the specifics of permitting and utility requirements unique to that island. What distinguishes us is not any single product but the consistency of our process: transparent proposals, realistic timelines, and a NABCEP-certified design approach behind every system we install.
We are a Tesla Premier Certified Installer with over 300 Google reviews, more than 2,000 systems installed statewide, and an estimated $10 million in cumulative utility savings generated for our customers. Our lead installers hold NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification (#091209-155), and we operate under Hawaii Electrical Contractor License #C-37984.
We were also recognized as one of Pacific Business News’ Best Places to Work in both 2022 and 2023, a reflection of the same culture we try to bring to customer projects.
How we sell
We do not use door-to-door sales tactics or quotas. If we have an opportunity to talk with a homeowner in person, we do it thoughtfully, but our business is not built around canvassing neighborhoods. Instead, we rely on referrals, reviews, and a transparent proposal process that lets homeowners compare our numbers against anyone else’s without pressure.
Community involvement
We are members of the Hawaii Solar Energy Association (HSEA) and participate in policy advocacy on behalf of the local solar industry. Following the 2023 Maui wildfires, we donated $50,000 in solar equipment and clean power support to Ohana Hope Village. We have also committed to donating 1% of profits toward providing sustainable energy access to families in need, and our team regularly volunteers for beach cleanups and trail restoration projects around the islands.
Working with us
Whether you are exploring solar panels for the first time, adding a battery for outage protection, or need ongoing service and maintenance on an existing system, our approach stays the same: clear information, realistic expectations, and installation quality we stand behind. Read more about our team and approach on our about page.
If you are ready to talk through what solar looks like for your home, contact us or call (808) 460-6015. We would rather answer your questions honestly than rush you into a decision.
