Giving Back to the Trails We Love: Independent Energy Hawaii Volunteers with Na Ala Hele

At Independent Energy Hawaii, our commitment to sustainability does not stop at solar panels and battery installs. Many of us on the team are outdoor enthusiasts who spend our weekends on the trails that make Hawaii what it is, and we wanted to put in a day giving back to them.

A day on the Puu Pia Trail

Our team joined the Na Ala Hele Trail Restoration Program on the Puu Pia Trail. Na Ala Hele is the state program responsible for maintaining the safety and integrity of Hawaii’s public trail system, work that rarely gets the recognition it deserves given how many hikers depend on it.

Like most trails in Hawaii, Puu Pia requires constant upkeep to combat erosion, overgrowth, and the wear of regular foot traffic. Our crew spent the day clearing brush, trimming back encroaching vegetation, and helping redefine the trail’s edges. It was physical work, but seeing the immediate difference by the end of the day made it worthwhile.

More than labor: a lesson in Hawaiian ecology

Working alongside experienced trail stewards turned into a hands-on education. We learned to identify native plants, including lace fern (pala’a), a species indigenous to Hawaii, and came to understand their role in the island’s ecosystem. We also learned how to spot and responsibly remove invasive species that threaten native habitat along the trail corridor.

That kind of grounding matters to us. Understanding the aina on a deeper level, not just as scenery but as a living system with its own history and challenges, changes how you think about stewardship generally. It is the same instinct that drives our interest in clean energy: reducing the strain we put on Hawaii’s natural resources, whether that is fossil fuel dependence or foot traffic on a fragile trail.

Why we keep showing up

Hawaii’s trails provide something that is easy to take for granted: a place to connect with nature, support physical and mental well-being, and share in the quality of life that draws so many of us to live here. Programs like Na Ala Hele depend on volunteer labor to keep that resource intact for residents and visitors alike, and we think supporting that work is a responsibility that comes with living here, not an optional extra.
